A Lesson From Oprah… "Following the Conversation"

I was listening to and watching Oprah talking with Uma Thurman on the TV. She was praising Uma for the great questions she asked during an interview with Meryl Streep.

Then Oprah asked Uma this question. When you were interviewing Meryl Streep… "Did you have the questions prepared or were you following the conversation?"

Uma replied, "Well, I prepared the questions, and I was also following the conversation."

What does "following the conversation" mean?

It means Uma was listening to the answers that Meryl Streep gave her and used the information to formulate her next questions. Even though she had prepared her questions, by coming "off script" she allowed Meryl Streep to show the authenticity of herself as opposed to the mask of the actress.

The interview came over as spontaneous, interesting and very attractive because she was present and... in the moment. They both were and became even more so as the interview developed.

She was still able to get her questions asked and answered except they were asked in a different way and were combined with scenic questions that helped reveal the overall story.

It's like driving down a country road which in itself is full of scenery and yet the real beauty and depth of the country side is revealed when you take diversions.

In Natural Selling you do the same thing. You prepare and learn basic types of questions and why you ask them, and you combine them with questions that naturally come from the answers you get to your previous questions. This is following the conversation… allowing the uniqueness of the other person to come through while at the some time discovering the underlying answers to your qualifying questions.

The dialogue then becomes fascinating and interesting for the two of you as long as you're prepared to listen.

People will reveal the most fascinating information about themselves if you allow them. They will also tell you everything you need to know for you to discover if your solution can help them achieve what they are looking for. No more telling and hoping that something you say will stick!

To be a master at following the conversation you need to be able to listen effectively and then ask the right questions. Chapters 7 and 10 of my book "How To Sell Network Marketing Without Fear, Anxiety or Losing Your Friends!" show you how to do this.

It's not hard to learn this skill and then you too will be spontaneous, interesting and very attractive, because just like Uma Thurman, you'll also be following the conversation while being present and in the moment.

By attracting people in this way, you'll find more people will be interested in what you have to offer and your business will benefit as a result.

To your success...
